Mississippi matters today, but what about tomorrow?

-- Regardless of the outcome of today's presidential primaries, Mississippians need to hold the attention of the three primary presidential contenders long after the polls close.

That's because all three - Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama - still occupy seats in the United States Senate and it is in that upper house of Congress that Rep. Gene Taylor's multi-peril insurance legislation is stalled.

These three senators could - with the national media attention constantly focused on them - instantly focus the nation's attention on the insurance crisis that is overtaking more and more American homeowners.

If the private sector will not or cannot offer homeowners affordable and accountable protection for their property, then the federal government must.

This deplorable situation is not limited to Mississippi. It affects residents of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Of New York and Maryland. Of Virginia and the Carolinas. Of Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas.

We usually encourage voter turnout on an election day. But today we encourage the candidates themselves - those running for president as well as those hoping to fill Mississippi's seats in Congress - to dedicate themselves to helping solve this problem before other coastal communities, and even communities far inland, are as overwhelmed as our communities have been by an insurance industry exempt from anti-trust legislation and more interested in profits than people.

Clinton got two big states- Texas and Ohio. She also got Rhode Island. Obama got Vermont.

Recently: Obama got Wisconsin.

Mississippi is coming up soon, and living in Memphis, I have already seen an Obama ad on tv (a lot of those Mississippians hang out in Memphis to get away from their tortured life in their state).

The Obama ad wasn't negative, it was just a clip of one of his speeches, and then headlines about his policies. I wasn't impressed. Of course, I have already voted and I am just waiting for the rest of the country to get done voting so we can find out who the hell the nominee is!!! (Hey, I need to get my car covered in obnoxious bumper stickers, and I need to know who the REAL candidates are before doing that!)

I just visited Nader's presidential site: http://www.votenader.org/

There is nothing on there about where he stands on the normal issues, though he does have the standard "Issues" section on his site's menu.

Thus- I have nothing to say about him right now... Other than "Why?"

I know that this country is great, and we open the presidential candidacy to all who qualify... And the best choice probably does not have a title like "Democrat" or "Republican," but... We have become a two party nation... We just have. It is a fact. Nader entering the race just confuses the hell out of the process, yet again.

That is just my opinion. I will be posting his views on the Iraq war and other crazy stuff that he says as I come across it.

By the way, Nader is 73. He will turn 74 on February 27th (in two days, send your brithday cards out TODAY!). He is older than McCain. This would make him 78 at the end of his presidency after one term, and if he were re-elected, he would be 82 at the end of that run...

Seriously?!?

So, the question is: Is Nader announcing his running for office more important than my Current Personal Problem?

Also, Obama won a Grammy for his audio book: "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream." If Obama ends up getting the Democratic ticket I will be picking up his book. Right now that just seems like a lot of work.

Facts Hurt

When Mary Poppins sang "just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down," she meant a spoonful of "comedy."

This is why The Daily Show and A Daily Show are needed: so we can digest the factual medicine that tastes so damn bad. Jon Stewart is more a chaser* than the actual shot of whiskey [I mean medicine (I mean facts**)].

You may say: "K8, facts are boring," or
"the only facts I need are the prices of a quarter of the good stuff and an ounce of schwag" or
"facts are scary."

Well, in my language those translate to:
"facts bore the shit out of me,"
"facts distract the shit out of me" and
"facts scare the shit out of me."

Obviously, this is the explanation for the "shits" you may be suffering after watching CNN. Not being a doctor, I feel I cannot even speculate on the tragic state of the human existence after watching C-SPAN.

While most TV news programs cause this severe side effect of diarrhea, the others rapidly shove suppositories up our asses. Jon and his writers soothe the nation as we "come to" in a daze wondering why our asses hurt.

I salute not only Jon, but his predecessors such as the brilliant anchors of "Weekly Update" on Saturday Night Live that I grew up watching. And what the hell, the not-so-brilliant ones, too. (You didn't think I was going to mention Kilborn, did you?) (Well I'm not.) (I mean I didn't.) (I will have not.)

Here you go, fellow Americans: a blog by an employed 24 year old pothead chick who watches The Daily Show and VOTES****.

I will tell you that I have dreams for this blog. Great big American Dreams. I believe the American Dream is different for each of us, but Eddie Izzard came close to summing it up in Dress to Kill when he said "You have the American Dream; the dream is to be born in the gutter, and raise, and grow up and get all the money in the world and stick it in your ears and go ( blows raspberry )"*****

Reasoning: While I would love to go into the actual mission that drove me to my computer in the middle of the night, leading me to post a blog 12 hours later, I am really just too tired. I can't type if I am falling asleep on the keyboard, and my guts are telling me that I have accomplished my first blog post already- without the mumbo-jumbo history lesson.
